Joanne Smith Merritt

Joanne Smith Merritt
Joanne Smith Merritt died Thursday, October 25, 2012. Joanne was born in Register, Georgia on the fourth of July, to Charles L. Smith and Mamie N. Smith. When she was four years old, her parents moved to Savannah. After graduating from Savannah High School, she attended The University of Georgia where she was an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Always fond of children, she taught school in both Augusta and Savannah. In order to pursue her love and appreciation of antiques, she began a new career with her dear friend Arthur G. Smith at Arthur Smith Antiques. She was active in the Savannah Symphony Women's Guild and The Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was a communicant of St. John's Church, where she was active in The Women of St. John's Church ECW.
Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 18 years, Robert J. Merritt; her brother, James C. Smith Melinda; her daughter, Cynthia S. Burnside; her son, Lawrence Lee Smith, Jr.; her granddaughter, Lauren F. Chapman Chris; her grandsons, Aubrey Lee Fuller, Charles Godfrey Douglas, Lawrence Lee Smith, III, Arthur Andrew Smith, and Franklin Turner Smith; her great-grandchildren, Cailynn Lee Chapman and Wesley Olan Chapman.
Affectionately known as "Joanie" by her family and many dear friends, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and loyal friend. Always the epitome of a gracious southern lady, her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 29, 2012 at St. John's Church. A reception will be held following the service in the Green Meldrim House. Burial will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
